For homes
Smart locks: a fingerprint lock for your front door
A smart lock does away with keys: you open the door with a fingerprint, a PIN or your phone, and give the domestic worker, a guest or a maintenance technician a temporary code instead of a key copy you can’t keep track of. It only works well if the lock actually suits your door and is fitted properly.
Send a request with your door type, number of doors and city, and installers serving your area send you quotes to compare.

What smart lock installation includes
Fitting a smart lock is more exacting than fitting a normal one, because the electronics must match the door and the mechanism inside it. A complete job covers:
Checking the door
The technician measures the door thickness, checks the material, the size of the mortise lock body and the opening direction, then suggests a suitable model.
Fitting and adjustment
Removing the old lock, sometimes enlarging the cut-out or fitting a new mortise, then mounting the outer and inner units and aligning the latch with the frame.
Enrolment and setup
Registering family fingerprints, setting a master PIN, pairing the app with your phone if supported, and deciding who is the administrator.
Handover
Testing every way of opening, explaining battery changes and the backup method, and handing you the mechanical backup keys and admin code.
Smart lock types and ways to open
Fingerprint. The most popular choice for homes: quick and impossible to forget. Fingerprints of elderly people, small children or people who work with their hands are not always read reliably, so they need a second method.
PIN code. Handy for guests and staff, and easy to change. Some locks let you type extra random digits around the real code, so it can’t be guessed from smudges on the keypad.
Card or key fob. Good for children, elderly family members and istiraha doors used by many people.
App via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Bluetooth opens from your phone when you are nearby; Wi-Fi (built in or through a bridge) adds remote opening, an entry log and alerts. Choose wireless devices approved for sale in Saudi Arabia and conforming to the standards.
Backup key. Most good locks keep a normal key cylinder for emergencies. Leave the spare with someone you trust outside the house, not under the doormat.

Who smart locks suit — and will one fit your door?
They suit villas with many family members, a domestic worker and a driver coming and going; apartments where you want to stop handing out key copies; and istirahas rented out or shared by relatives in turns, where each group gets a code for a set period.
Wooden doors are usually the easiest. Steel doors need a lock matched to their thickness and mechanism and may need the cut-out modified. Aluminium frames tend to be narrow, so a slim-body lock is chosen. Glass doors have dedicated locks that clamp or mount on the frame without drilling the glass. Outdoor gates in direct sun need a lock rated for the heat.
For offices and premises that need permissions for many staff and attendance reports, access control systems are the better fit.
What affects the price of a smart lock?
We don’t publish prices; quotes vary with:
- Ways to open
A PIN-only lock differs from one combining fingerprint, card, app and Wi-Fi.
- Door type
Steel and glass doors, or doors that need a new internal mechanism, take more work.
- Number of doors
One apartment door is not the same as a villa with a main door, kitchen door, annex and gate.
- Extras
An internet bridge, integration with the intercom and cameras, or a particular handle design.
For a general view of security system costs, see our cost guide.
Installation steps
- 1. Photos and measurements
Send photos of both sides of the door and the current lock; that is often enough for the installer to suggest models.
- 2. Quote
It names the model and opening methods, whether door modification is included, and the warranty on lock and fitting.
- 3. Fitting
One door usually takes a few hours; steel doors or doors needing modification take a little longer.
- 4. Setup with the family
Ideally everyone who will use the lock is there at handover to register their fingerprints.
Batteries and upkeep
Most smart locks run on batteries and warn you with a sound, a light or an app alert well before they run out. Change them as soon as you are warned. Many models also have an external port to power the lock briefly from a power bank if the batteries die while you are out, on top of the backup key.
Wipe dust off the fingerprint reader, update the lock and app, and review the list of fingerprints and codes now and then. When a domestic worker or driver leaves, delete their fingerprint and code the same day.
Security and privacy with a smart lock
Fingerprints are sensitive data. Ask whether they are stored only inside the lock or uploaded to a cloud service, and protect the app account with a strong password and two-step verification if offered. The entry log is a household tool, so let family members and staff know it exists.
Make sure the door opens from inside with the handle, no code or fingerprint needed, so everyone can get out easily in an emergency. We do not provide any information on opening locks without the owner’s permission; if you are locked out and the backup methods fail, contact the company that fitted the lock and prove you are the owner.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Does the lock suit my door’s thickness and type?
Have the door type, size and proposed model written into the quote.
- What is the backup way in?
A mechanical key? An external power port? Know it before you need it.
- Is the lock approved for sale in Saudi Arabia?
Especially if it has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth — and ask about warranty and spare parts.
- Does the installer have a clear commercial registration?
Smart locks: common questions
What happens if the smart lock battery runs out?
The lock warns you well in advance. If it does go flat, open it with the backup key or by connecting a power bank to the external port, if your model has one.
Can I give the domestic worker their own code?
Yes. Most locks allow a code or fingerprint per person, and some allow temporary codes for set hours. Delete them when no longer needed.
Can a smart lock go on a steel door?
Usually yes, with a model matched to the door’s thickness and mechanism; it may need some modification. Send a photo of the door with your request.
Can I unlock the door from my phone when I am away?
Only if the lock connects to Wi-Fi directly or through a bridge. Bluetooth-only locks open from close by.
Can the lock work with my intercom?
Some systems integrate, so you see the visitor on the intercom or video doorbell and let them in. Mention it in your request — home cameras can be added too.
Do you sell locks?
No. SaudiSecurity passes your request, with your consent, to installers; the sale and warranty are between you and the company you choose.
