For private schools and nurseries
Cameras and safety systems for private schools and nurseries
Parents trust a school or nursery with what matters most to them, and expect a well-run gate, a safe building and full respect for their children’s privacy. Security systems serve all of this: a fire alarm and evacuation plan, access control, and cameras in shared areas only.
Whether it is a small nursery or a private school with several buildings, send one request and get quotes from licensed installers of cameras, fire systems and access control.

What a school or nursery needs
The gate at pick-up time is the most sensitive moment of the day: who collects each child, and which visitors enter the building. Cameras at the gate, a visitor entry system and an intercom at nursery entrances all help.
Fire safety is a priority, because the building is full of children who need a calm, quick evacuation. General coverage of corridors, yards and playgrounds helps the management organise breaks and movement between buildings.
Where cameras go in a school
Gates and pick-up area
A camera for each gate, and one for the parents’ waiting area and bus bay.
Reception and visitor entrance
The reception desk and the spot where visitors sign in before entering.
Corridors and stairs
Cameras in shared corridors, stairwells and emergency exits.
Yards, playgrounds and parking
Wide-angle outdoor cameras for yards, playgrounds and the school boundary.
Where not to put cameras: toilets, changing rooms, the nurse’s room and school clinic, and nappy-changing and sleeping areas in nurseries. Any camera inside classrooms needs prior confirmation of the education authority’s requirements and clear notice to parents.
Fire alarms and evacuation
Schools and nurseries need a fire alarm system with detectors covering classrooms, labs, the kitchen and corridors, plus emergency lighting, clear exits and extinguishers throughout — along with an evacuation plan and regular drills that teachers and pupils know. These requirements are tied to licensing through the official Civil Defense platforms, and the education authority may have additional ones.
Fire systems are installed and maintained by fire-safety contractors accredited with Civil Defense, and regular maintenance with records matters. More in our fire alarm and Civil Defense guide.
Access control and staff attendance
Access control in a school means a visitor cannot reach classrooms without passing reception, and building doors, labs and the server room open only for authorised staff. The same system records teachers’ and staff attendance.
In nurseries, a video intercom at the door lets staff see who is there before opening. Whatever the system, exit doors must release automatically on a fire alarm.
Compliance and children’s privacy
The surveillance camera law and its implementing regulations may cover educational premises and set the areas to cover and how long recordings are kept. The Ministry of Education or the body licensing nurseries may have extra requirements. Check what applies to you, and see surveillance camera compliance.
Children’s images need particular care: no live viewing outside the management, no sharing clips with parents or on social media, and access limited to named people. Any request for a recording is handled through the proper channels.
What to include in your quote request
- Type of premises (private school, nursery), stages taught, and number of buildings and floors.
- A site plan or photos of gates, yards and corridors, marking places that must stay camera-free.
- School hours, and installation during holidays or after pupils leave.
- The retention you need and who in the management needs viewing access.
- Existing cabling and the state of the current fire system.
- Whether you need access control, an intercom or a maintenance contract in the quote.

School and nursery systems: common questions
Can I give parents a live stream from the classroom?
That exposes other children’s images to anyone with the link, and may be subject to specific rules. Check with the supervising authority first; as a rule, viewing stays with the management.
When should installation happen so lessons are not disrupted?
Ideally during holidays or after pupils leave. Mention it in your request so it is written into the schedule.
Does a small nursery need a fire alarm system?
Requirements depend on size and activity, and nurseries usually need clear safety measures. Confirm them through Civil Defense and an accredited contractor.
Do cameras replace a managed gate?
No. Cameras record, but a safe gate needs clear pick-up procedures and visitor entry. Systems support procedures; they don’t replace them.
