Fire alarm systems for restaurants and businesses in Jeddah

Jeddah has many restaurants, cafés, hotels and serviced apartments — all activities where Civil Defense pays attention to safety measures. An alarm that works properly in Jeddah has to account for two things you don’t see in dry cities: kitchen steam and high humidity.

If you are fitting out a new activity or renewing a licence, this page helps you know what to ask for in the quote. For the general picture see our fire alarm page.

Restaurants: the right detector in the right place

A standard smoke detector in a kitchen gives repeated alarms from steam and cooking, so some owners disable it — a serious mistake. The right fix is for the accredited firm to choose the right detector for each area: heat detectors in the kitchen, for example, and smoke detectors in the dining area and storeroom. Hood suppression in commercial kitchens is a related topic, so ask about it in the same quote.

Never disable or cover a detector; ask the firm to change its type or position if false alarms keep happening.

Humidity and false alarms

In spaces without air conditioning or close to the sea, high humidity can affect some detectors and cause false alarms or faults in connections. Ask which detector types suit warehouses, car parks and semi-open spaces, and about sealed connections and junction boxes.

Regular maintenance in Jeddah is not a formality: cleaning detectors and checking batteries and the control panel prevents many problems, and you may be asked for the maintenance record. See maintenance contracts.

Hotels, serviced apartments and buildings

Hotels and serviced apartments host guests who don’t know the building, so clear sounders on every floor, emergency lighting and exit signs are essential. Large apartment buildings also need a control panel the owner or caretaker knows how to read. Details by type of premises on our hotels and residential buildings pages.

Choosing the firm

  • Choose fire-safety contractors or companies accredited with Civil Defense, and check the accreditation yourself.
  • Ask for a drawing showing detectors, manual call points and sounders before work starts.
  • Ask whether the firm will follow up the safety certificate with you through the official Civil Defense platforms, or only hand you the documents.
  • Make sure the quote includes testing, handover and training on the control panel.

FAQ

How often does a fire alarm system in Jeddah need servicing?

Service intervals are set in the contract and by what Civil Defense requires for your activity, and Jeddah’s humidity is one more reason not to let them slip. Ask for a written record of every visit and detector and sounder test.

The kitchen detector goes off whenever we cook. What should I do?

Don’t disable it. Ask the accredited firm to change its type or position — the spot often needs a heat detector instead of a smoke detector.

Does a small café need an alarm system?

It depends on the activity, size and building. Check the requirements before opening rather than assuming a small place is exempt.

Do you obtain the safety certificate for me?

No. We connect you with installation firms; the certificate is issued by Civil Defense once requirements are met. See the Civil Defense guide.
