Fire alarm systems in Makkah

In a building where the guests change every few days, most people don’t know where the emergency exit is or what the alarm sounds like. That is why a fire alarm in Makkah’s hotels and serviced apartments is more than detectors on the ceiling: it has to warn quickly, guide people out, and stay in good order through months of high occupancy.

This page covers what sets premises in Makkah apart. For the components and types of system in general, see fire alarm systems.

High occupancy and guests who don’t know the building

During the seasons each floor holds more people, many of them elderly or visiting the Kingdom for the first time, and speaking different languages. Some hotels therefore consider voice evacuation messages in more than one language, clearly lit exit signs, and a notice inside each room showing the escape route.

Discuss these options with the fire-safety company. Start with what Civil Defense requirements say for your activity and the size of your building, then add what makes sense for your guests.

Buildings converted to serviced apartments

Some residential buildings are later used as serviced apartments or visitor accommodation. A change of use can change the fire-safety requirements: the number of detectors, the type of control panel, emergency exits and emergency lighting. Before opening, ask the competent authority about the requirements, and have the fire-safety company assess the building as it is used now — not as it was first designed.

Hotel kitchens, catering and restaurants

Kitchens cooking for large numbers in the seasons usually need heat detectors rather than smoke detectors in the cooking area, so steam and ordinary cooking fumes don’t set off the alarm, plus a suitable suppression system over the cooking line. In busy restaurants, linking the kitchen and dining area to one panel makes monitoring easier. More on our restaurant security page.

Maintenance and testing before the season

The best time for a full check is a few weeks before the season begins: testing detectors, sounders, the control panel and backup batteries, and reviewing the maintenance log. Installation and maintenance go to fire-safety contractors accredited with Civil Defense, and the safety certificate is issued through Civil Defense’s official platforms. The steps are explained in our fire alarm and Civil Defense guide.

FAQ

Does my hotel need a fire alarm system?

Commercial premises need fire-safety systems suited to their activity and size, and a hotel or serviced-apartment building by its nature houses many people, so it can’t do without a suitable alarm. The exact requirements are set by Civil Defense, so confirm them with the competent authority and an accredited company.

How often should the fire system be serviced?

We don’t state a fixed interval, because requirements vary with the activity and the system. What matters is regular servicing under a clear contract, a full check before each season and a written record of every visit. Ask about maintenance contracts.

Can I request fire alarm and CCTV quotes together?

Yes — list both services in the same request. Some companies offer both, but fire work remains the domain of Civil Defense–accredited contractors, so check the company’s accreditation for that part specifically. For cameras, see business CCTV in Makkah.
